Sleeping stones

A new archaeological excavation is to take place at Stonehenge. And guess what the preparations involved?

Druids were also invited to give their blessing to disrupting the long sleep of the stones.

Yikes. What will happen when the stones wake up? Will they scare sheep? Attack tourists? Write to the papers to express disgust at the poor quality of the visitor centre and the traffic noise?

The surrender to obscurantist nonsense continues daily. I can't wait for the first Druid faith school.

A Druid Faith School? What a brilliant idea! Why haven't we had a Druid schools before now? Must be discrimination. Celebs would queue up to sign their kids; most of them have just the right names already.

Assembly would last most of the day. No modern rubbish like Creationism on the curriculum. Mind you, PE will be a right b***er in those robes.

Larkers; You be a Druid, I'll be an Oblate and Peter R can be a Bard. Actually its rather how I see him. (The "official" name of the Druids is the Order of Bards, Oblates and Druids.)

Sorry; its OVATE; Bards, Ovates and Druids. One of the pages on the website tells you what the difference is. They all have to get up dead early on Summer Solstice day anywho.

"What will happen when the stones wake up?"

I've read enough HP Lovecraft to know that nothing good will happen in this event.

Check out some of the Druidery on Youtube. Some of the very worst music you will ever hear in your life. Guarenteed. (Druids or OBOD gets you there, if you dare....)

Is there such a thing as a fundamentalist druid and have they had a schism yet?

Just asking like...

There are a number of different Druid groups from what I can see, but it does appear that there is no real concept of doctrinal orthodoxy within the Druid path, and hence fundamentalism per se appears rather unlikely. I'll continue my investigations, which have reminded me of the excellence of the academic work on modern paganism of Ronald Hutton. One intersting snippet is that one of the earliest promoters of neo-Druidery - I believe he founded the Ancient Druid Order, which is still going and which sort of preceded the more important(today) Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids - was George MacGregor Reid, a Socialist who also ran the Church of the Universal Bond. There appears to be very little material on this guy available. PH D anyone?

By the way - I am not a "real" ovate, and have no desire to become one. I find it very hard to get up early for anything, let alone summer solstice. I hate the music accompanying the videos. And I don't want to go to Glastonbury. Unless the 'Mots are playing there.

I understand that the People's Druid Army (Merlinist) split away over the issue of sacrificing virgins. Might give them problems for a faith school but should be a breeze sponsoring a city academy these days.

All this bickering! I am leaving to form my own religion. I've got a stone in the back yard ... Another two or three and I'm there.

Is there any money in starting a school?

Forming your own religion? So you've twigged what this Druidry is all about.

Why were druids invited? Nobody knows what Stonehenge was used for and whether it had a relious function at all -- perhaps it was a neolithic football pitch, or they played croquet in the 'round'. 'Modern' druidism is a C19 confection.

Perhaps the date at the foot of the post is a clue.

Hey, what's with all this "19th Century" ? The Ancient Order of Druids traces its roots a lot further back than that - to 1717. So, make that 18th Century.

Such scepticism directed against a noble and ancient faith.

If pagans were involved in croquet at Stonehenge, it might not have been in the round, but in the buff - "skyclad" as the ancient term has it.

I like the idea of round Druids myself - though not in the buff if my mirror is a good guide to aesthetics.

I suspect I am going to wake up in a cold sweat some time in the future thinking about naked Druids playing croquet at Stonehenge. Only blogging could have resulted in this image. Maybe that's an argument against it........... (actually, on balance, no.)

Will said...

No naked druids but plenty german naked hippys

Just doing my bit to keep the comments ticking over on this one...

The Plump said...

I will always remember the time I was naked with Nuinn.

No mention of croquet though.

There is here though

The last two posts by the Plump one are a blatant attempt to 'keep the comments ticking over' ploy. I am not going to fall for it.

No sireee. Not me.

Will said...

'Comments' -- not fucking 'posts'.

Accuracy of terminological use is paramount in these situations.

Because blog comments are important and that (in the grand scheme of things and that).

Will said...

There has to be a blog post in this report somewhere but I am fucked if I can figure one out...

Hey! Stay focused. Druidry is important. Its growing at such a rate that there will be Druid chaplains in the forces and official recognition in the RE syllabus soon. YOUR kid could be learning about naked croquet at Stonehenge soon.

What a foul calumny. Would I do that?

Will said...

Asking a question is a favourite ploy to garner more comments.

Won't work with me. Not falling for that old trick.

Won't work with me.

Why not?

Will said...

Dunno.

Need to think about the question.

So are we finished with skyclad Druids playing Croquet in the evening sunshine down at Stonehenge, sipping Pimms? Shame, evocative image, almost like small boys playing football in the park, jumpers for goalposts.............

DruidsNow resort to mind control

Cats that look like Hitler in alliance with Druids is seriously sinister. Perhaps we should set up a website to alert the world to the dangers.

Thank god they are only trying to stimulate murder and suicide and not nude croquet.
