Major argument

"The argument that someone is a bad man is an inadequate argument for war and certainly an inadequate and unacceptable argument for regime change."
John Major quoted in today's Guardian.

I can think of some people who may disagree.

I am surprised that Major has chosen this juncture at which to disburden himself of these speculations; for such they are. The general rule has been that past Prime ministers are above the fray. But, you see there is an election coming and the Tories have sensed that the chattering classes are swinging behind their disingenuous 'doubts' about the Liberation of Iraq and ousting of the Taliban. I note the director of the Royal Court Theatre (yes, that one) is purring nice words in the direction of the Conservatives in an interview in today's Observer.

Watch the glitterati left (sic) turn their coats over the coming months.

You are right - and it marks a slow return to traditional Conservative foreign policy as exemplified by the Major Government's stance on Bosnia.

The most strikingly silly part of his argument was where he said that the fact that a country is ruled by an appalling, bloody dictatorship is not a good argument for war, but is an even worse argument for getting rid of that dictatorship. I needed a double take on that one.
