Modernity

Football fan message boards aren't usually inspiring. But this thread was:
What made me most proud about yesterday ......was that a man wearing make-up and heels could do a lap of honour and get a standing ovation at a football ground in 21st century Britain.
One reason why we live in a better world than the one I grew up in.

Eddie Izzard. Marathon man.

For now. But how much longer? I sense the gains made by the open and plural society are, as far as some on the 'left' (sic) are concerned, 'negotiable' if they offend.

That's the importance of the football crowd. Twenty five thousand ordinary people as opposed to some self-important, precious middle class wankers who don't realise how utterly irrelevant they are. The people will win. The changes are irreversible.

I think that is about right Peter. The Corbynaut Left find understanding the average white British man a huge step to undertake. So they don't. But they not you or me will be the ones to take power.

A Crystal Palace crowd isn't wholly white, nor working class for that matter ("Stripy Nigels," is what Millwall fans call them). And, of course, the Corbyn left won't be taking power, they will lose to the Tories, which is another part of the problem. You are right though that neither of us will.

But I do think that there is another point. On most social issues, politics follows rather than leads. The inherent disobedience of people not subjected to extreme force is to be relished. I look back at the attempts to change society - from Victorian values, through back to basics, to the respect agenda - and they have been total failures. Nobody took any notice. So relax Anton, the world will go on not giving a toss whatever. And what a fine thing that is.
